![]() However, through Gifty, we see the dynamic relationship between her and her mother crumble after the unfortunate death of her older brother, Nana, due to an overdose. Originally from Ghana, Gifty’s mother immigrated to Alabama and dedicated her life to faith and providing for her two children. Gifty is a PhD candidate in neuroscience at the Standard University School of Medicine studying reward-seeking behaviour in mice and its correlation with depression and addiction through neural circuits. Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi is an emotionally gripping story about faith, addiction, depression, loss and so much more. Transcendent Kingdom is a journey to say the least and although the ending felt very lacklustre, it was reading Gifty’s thoughts on people, events, and her beliefs that truly make this journey worthwhile. ![]() There is something about this novel that feels so fresh in its flow but also heart-wrenching and reflective in the narration. I'm sure there were lots of clever little moments where knowing the other stories would have given a little more insight, but it wasn't necessary. (Hear that? That's the sound of fifteen more books hitting my TBR pile.) It was nice to be able to jump into this new series and not feel like I didn't know what was going on because I haven't read the others. I'm such a huge fan of any story involving this level of mythology, so I'm kicking myself for not reading Riordan's many other books. This is my first time reading Rick Riordan, although I've seen the Percy Jackson movies and really enjoyed both. But along the way, Apollo learns what it means to be mortal and realizes he might not have been so perfect after all.
